Human-Centered AI, Metacognition, and Ethical AI in Education
Catheryn Reardon, PhD is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University and an AI Strategist for the Psychology Digital Immersion Programs. Her work focuses on human-centered AI in education, metacognition, ethical AI use, instructor presence, and the design of learning experiences that preserve human agency in AI-supported environments.
She is also a former K–12 high school English teacher, an experience that continues to shape her emphasis on writing, communication, and student-centered pedagogy. With extensive experience in online teaching and instructional design, Catheryn has developed courses, frameworks, and faculty resources that support thoughtful, transparent, and educationally meaningful engagement with artificial intelligence. Her work emphasizes reflection, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making rather than passive reliance on technology.
Catheryn Reardon’s teaching and research center on the intersection of psychology, learning, and artificial intelligence. She is especially interested in how students think with AI, how AI influences confidence, revision, and decision-making, and how educators can support metacognitive awareness while integrating emerging technologies into coursework.
Her work is grounded in a human-centered approach that draws from both her background in psychology and her experience as a writing-focused educator. Building on long-standing interests in online learning, instructor social presence, and student engagement, she designs learning environments that prioritize clarity, reflection, and meaningful interaction. These foundations continue to inform her development of AI-integrated instructional models that support both learning and ethical responsibility.
Catheryn Reardon developed the Human-Centered AI Metacognitive Learning Model (HAIML) to guide how students engage with AI through experience, reflection, and ethical evaluation.
